Botox is a prescription medicine that is injected into areas of the face and neck to reduce or eliminate fine lines and wrinkles. It is made from botulinum toxin, which is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

The protein is purified and diluted with saline for injection into the desired area. Each treatment takes about 10 minutes to perform. There is no downtime needed afterward, and you may resume normal activities right away. Talk to our dentist about whether you’re a candidate for this treatment!

How Does Botox Work?

Most people are familiar with the concept of botulinum toxin injection therapy but may be less familiar with how the therapy actually works and that it’s also designed to treat conditions like bruxism and TMJ disorder.

A dual-channel delivery system is used to inject the botulinum toxin in a consistent manner so that equal doses are injected into each side of the orbicularis oris muscle, which is responsible for many facial movements. The injections are made using small needles designed to only deliver very small dosages of the medication to the affected area.

Before the procedure begins, the injection sites will be cleaned and sterilized to minimize the risk of infection and other complications. Some patients may experience minor discomfort during the injections, but the treatment generally does not require anesthesia. Many patients report experiencing no pain at all during the process, and those who do experience some discomfort report that it is typically very mild.

Cosmetic Uses of Botox

Although there are some medical uses for Botox, most people who use it do so because they want to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and frown lines.

Botox is used for patients who want to fix moderate or severe crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, or furrows between their eyes. It can also be used to treat neckbands and other fine lines.

Botox works by relaxing the facial muscles responsible for making facial expressions. When the muscles are relaxed, the skin above them smoothes out, resulting in fewer lines and wrinkles. Results can last for several months before another appointment is needed.
